The most expensive breakdown she never had cost $400 a month in rent nobody knows about

What keeps certain women intact isn’t balance or resilience. It’s a small, unproductive refusal that most people misunderstand.

Let's skip the part where we pretend you have balance, because you don't, and nobody running at your speed does. The word was invented by someone who has never been responsible for outcomes that keep other people employed, fed, or enrolled in schools that cost more than her first apartment.

You're managing, and managing well enough that most people around you have no idea how close the whole operation is to tipping at any given moment. But you know, because you always know.

Here's what I've noticed about women who last, and I want to be specific about what I mean by that because I'm not talking about women who have a good five years and then vanish into some carefully worded LinkedIn post about "exciting new chapters." I mean the women who are fifteen, twenty years in, still sharp, still formidable, still genuinely enjoying the architecture of the life they built rather than being quietly crushed by it.

Every single one of them has stopped apologizing for the thing that keeps her going. And the thing that keeps her going is never what you'd expect.

It's not the trainer or the pharmacist or the doctor who writes the prescriptions that get her through earnings week, and it's not the night nurse she kept even though the youngest is seven, and it's not the marriage that functions as a well-run merger with occasional tenderness and a shared calendar that would make a project manager weep.
